A poesia de Lord Byron

Prometeu Moderno (The Modern Prometheus) tem como personagem central Lord Byron. Diversos trabalhos do poeta inglês foram usados no episódio:

SHE WALKS IN BEAUTY (Ela Caminha em Beleza)

Duncan e Methos recitam parte desta poesia, enquanto caminham pela rua em direção ao carro de Mac. Foi publicada pela primeira vez em 1815.

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

CHILDE HAROLD'S PILGRIMAGE/Canto IV (124)

Lord Byron lê para seus amigos (Methos/Dr. Adams, Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley e Claire) alguns versos deste longuíssimo poema e, muito crítico de seu próprio trabalho, diz que é "tudo bobagem":

...Though to the last, in verge of our decay,
Some phantom lures, such as we sought at first -
But all too late, - so are we doubly curst.
Life, fame, ambition, avarice - 'tis the same,
Each idle, and all ill, and none the worst -

A obra de William Shakespeare (1564–1616) em Highlander

A MEGERA DOMADA (THE TAMING OF THE SHREW)

No flashback do episódio Timeless (Inglaterra, 1663), Duncan MacLeod está viajando com Walter Graham e sua pequena companhia de teatro.

A Megera Domada é a peça em que vemos Walter e Duncan encenarem para uma pequena (mas crítica) platéia — o Highlander, muito a contragosto, fazendo o papel feminino, "Kate" (Katharina), e Walter interpretando "Petruchio". A cena, cujas falas Duncan "Kate" MacLeod recusa-se a dizer corretamente:

PETRUCHIO: Grumio, my horse.

GRUMIO: Ay, Sir, they be ready; the oats have eaten the horses.

PETRUCHIO: O Kate, content thee; prithee, be not angry.

KATE: I will be angry: what hast thou to do? Father, be quiet; he shall stay my leisure.

A Megera Domada foi adaptada por três vezes pela TV brasileira — em 1965, na novela A Indomável (de Ivani Ribeiro), na TV Excelsior; em 1974, na novela O Machão (de Sérgio Jockyman, com Antônio Fagundes e Maria Isabel de Lisandra), na TV Tupi; e finalmente, em 2000, na novela global O Cravo e a Rosa (de Walcyr Carrasco), com Eduardo Moscovis como "Petruchio" e Adriana Esteves como "Catarina". A peça também teve uma adaptação para o cinema em 1967, com Elizabeth Taylor e Richard Burton nos papéis principais.

Também em Timeless, Walter Graham lê as primeiras linhas deste soneto para Duncan:

MACBETH

Duncan, sendo escocês, na época de sua juventude (mortal e imortal) falava gaélico e, como era muito comum naquela época, não sabia escrever. Ele só aprendeu a ler inglês em 1658 (tinha 66 anos), quando procurou refúgio por uns tempos no monastério fundado pelo monge Imortal Paul e Timon emprestou-lhe o livro Macbeth, de Shakespeare (episódio Song of the Executioner). A peça, escrita em 1606, foi inspirada na história do rei escocês Macbeth.

Duncan lê alto duas partes da peça:

O Romance de Mary Shelley

FRANKENSTEIN

Em The Modern Prometheus Lord Byron lê para Duncan e Methos algumas linhas finais da maior obra da escritora inglêsa Mary Shelley, Frankenstein. A Criatura (que não se chama Frankenstein, este é o nome do criador) fala:

Light, feeling, and sense will pass away; and in this condition must I find my happiness.*

*Luz, sentimento e percepção passarão; e nesta condição devo encontrar minha felicidade.

O Brasil em Highlander e Highlander no Brasil

E eles lembraram de nós (talvez antes não tivessem!)

Em Methuselah's Gift há uma enorme bandeira do Brasil pendurada na parede da casa dos bandidos que tentaram matar Amanda no começo do episódio — ela pode ser vista quando Duncan e Amaanda entram na casa para "investigar".

Em Saving Grace, Carlo Sendaro, o ex-amante de Grace Chandel que não a deixa em paz, por séculos tem morado e conduzido seus negócios (não muito lícitos) no Brasil, na Amazônia.

Em Counterfeit, parte I, o trailer que explode é um Brasilia 410.

Dublagem

Em Revelation 6:8 há um diálogo entre Methos e Cassandra que assim escutamos dublado:

Methos: Nãoengane você mesma. (Methos se levanta e se aproxima de Cassandra) Vamos conversar. Será como um desabafo. Você me servia comida, fazendo de tudo, buscando minha aprovação. Eu me apaixonei.

Que no original foi escrito assim:

Methos: Don't hate yourself. Stockholm Syndrome. It's like Patty Hearst. Hostages come to rely on their captors for food, for approval, and they fall in love

Que significa:

Methos: Não se odeie. Síndrome de Estocolmo. É como aconteceu com Patty Hearst. Reféns ficam dependentes de seus captores, procuram agradá-los para garantir comida, procuram por sua aprovação, e acabam se apaixonando...
